This talk explores the Great War experiences and subsequent careers of Lieutenant-Colonel Gerald Bryce Ferguson Smyth, DSO and Bar, French Croix de Guerre and Belgian Croix de guerre and his brother Major George Osbert Sterling Smyth, DSO and MC – from Banbridge, Co. Down. The talk also looks at the Great War experiences of some members of the well known Murphy brewing family from Cork.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Gerard O’Meara is Secretary of the Cork Branch of the Western Front Association. He recently published his book, Lorrha People in the Great War. The book details the Great War experiences of people from his native parish in Tipperary. It features a chapter on his namesake, Martin O’Meara VC who served with the Australian Imperial Force
